We have all heard it so many times this generation, we have read it dozens of times in articles all over the internet. “Mature third party games do not sell on the Wii U” they say, “Only Nintendo’s own IP’s sell on Nintendo consoles”. While it might be true that Nintendo games tend to sell better than third party games on Nintendo’s consoles, it is hardly a fair comparison if you are comparing Nintendo’s software with cheap half baked third party ports that the Wii U has had this generation. I could go into a bit of a rant about it but I kind of already did that before, instead we are going to take a look at the progress of #OperationPlatinum and dish out what we know about it thus far.
#OperationPlatinum is a fan made movement designed to prove nay saying third party developers/publishers wrong by helping Bayonetta 2 to 1 million global sales. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot stated that Nintendo gamers do not buy mature games and totally ignored the fact that Zombie U sold over 700k units worldwide. If #OperationPlatinum is successful, Guillemot can eat his words along with his half arsed Wii U ports of Assassins Creed 3 and Assassins Creed 4: Black Flag. Not only that, the success of #OperationPlatinum would hopefully open the eyes of other developers/publishers who also thought that mature third party software had no home on the Wii U and would consider releasing their games on the platform. I’m not expecting miracles but it would be nice to see at least a couple of developers/publishers do this.
Bayonetta 2 is technically a second party game since Nintendo are publishing it, but the developers Platinum Games are still a third party developer so the success of the game will show that Nintendo gamers DO buy mature third party games. They buy third party games that are fun to play and are brimming with quality, not games that are ported over and missing half the games features and sometimes drop to around 20 frames per second. #OperationPlatinum is not just a good way to shove Guillemot’s words back in his face, it is a way to get Bayonetta 2 the recognition it deserves and gives Nintendo a platform in which to build with relationships with third party developers/publishers in the future. We have the chance as core gamers to help (even if only a little) bring back the kind of games and support to our Nintendo consoles that they have been desperately lacking in recent years.
So what kind of an impact is #OperationPlatinum having so far? Well it is not entirely easy to tell since the game has not been released in The US or Europe. Bayonetta 2 releases in those territories on Friday 24/10 and once we see how the sales of the game are, we can then begin to see what kind of an impact #OperationPlatinum made. Bayonetta 2 has been released in Japan already having seen release a few weeks ago and has since sold around 50,000+ units over there. While this may not seem like much, Bayonetta 2 is largely a game that is more suited for western gamers anyway and I am not sure how much of an impact #OperationPlatinum has really had in Japan. In terms of sales, what I do know is that the game has at least sold over 15,000 copies in Europe as the European exclusive “First Print” edition has been sold out and was sold out almost as instant as its unavailing. All is not lost for those of you hoping on getting a “First Print” edition of the game which includes the original Bayonetta game, Bayonetta 2, the book of angels and the art of Bayonetta, as I have seen listings on ebay for this limited edition on ebay. You need to be willing to fork out over £100 for it though.
That is not all, Bayonetta 2 is also top of the pre order charts on shopto.net and is currently the best price in the UK for the special edition of the game which includes a copy of both Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2. This is where I pre ordered my copy for a bargain of £39.85 but since it’s the top pre ordered game on the site, get in there quick with your pre order before it sells out if you haven’t pre ordered it already. This is a really good price for the game as it is basically the same price you pay for a brand new game and we are getting the original Bayonetta packed in so it is essentially two games for the price of one. I am making a big deal of this deal from shopto.net because Europeans do not get the original Bayonetta packed in every copy of Bayonetta 2 for free. For those of you in the US who have not already pre ordered your copy, head on over to Amazon where it is currently listed for $59.96.
How else has #OperationPlatinum contributed to the potential success of Bayonetta 2? Well Monday 13/10 seemed to be a good day for the game as not only was it the number one trend on Twitter, it also rose to number 3 on Amazons movers and shakers list after jumping 585% in the US. These are small contributions really, but as we draw nearer to the imminent release of the game, Bayonetta 2 is being talked about more and more. At the time of writing this article, Bayonetta 2 is currently number 5 on Amazons video games best sellers in the US and is number 10 on Amazons UK list. The UK is not a very big market for Nintendo in general, so it is nice to see that the Wii U has a game in the top 10.
So will #OperationPlatinum be a success? Selling 1 million copies of Bayonetta 2 worldwide will not be an easy ride but one thing is for certain, there clearly are people who are passionate in making this game do well. When Guillemot opened his mouth about Nintendo gamers not buying mature games it pissed a lot of Nintendo gamers off, who would like nothing better than for Bayonetta 2 to succeed so they can point and laugh at Guillemot’s way off the mark comments. A game does not have to sell a million units to be successful though, hell there are not many games that have sold a million units on the Wii U so if Bayonetta 2 does achieve this it will be one hell of an achievement. But even if it doesn’t, #OperationPlatinum would have for sure helped the game sell more copies than it originally would have so it shouldn’t go down as a total loss.
If anything, #OperationPlatinum has made people across the world come together to fight for something they love, a better future for gaming where all third party multiplats can be enjoyed on every console, Including Nintendo’s. #OperationPlatinum has even reached as far as Platinum Games themselves, Bayonetta 2 producer JP Kellams promised to wear a #OperationPlatinum t-shirt at the Tokyo Game Show event 2014 if he received over 4000 followers on Twitter by the end of August. He received well over 4000 in the end so ended up wearing one. Bayonetta 2 should be enjoyed by everyone, at the end of the day fans of the original who moaned a lot about the sequel being a Wii U exclusive should buy a Wii U to play this game. They surely cannot be that much of a fan if they don’t, I would buy an Xbox One tomorrow if a sequel to Skies of Arcadia was announced as an Xbox One exclusive!
Any of you Wii U owners still need convincing to get Bayonetta 2? I can offer you three pieces of advice, first check out one of my previous articles which discusses reasons you should be pumped for the game. Second check out all the reviews for the game, they all speak very highly of the game and received 10/10 from “Destructoid”, a 10/10 from “EDGE”, a 10/10 from “Gamespot”, a 9.5/10 from “IGN” and a 9.8/10 from “Gametrailers” to name a few. At the time of writing this article, Bayonetta 2 has a metacritic score of 9.1 so there is no denying the games quality. Lastly I can point you in the direction of the Bayonetta 2 demo that recently became available on the Wii U eshop, it costs nothing and is a real blast. You get to play through the prologue of the game and get a brief understanding of how the story will unfold, you also get to learn the basics in chaining combos together in combat. You also get to punch a huge demon type dragon in the face! What’s not to like?
I would love to here what you guys think about #OperationPlatinum, do you think it will be a success or is it destined to fail? Are you still on the fence about buying Bayonetta 2? Have you tried the demo yet? Let me know what you guys think in the comments section below. For now, here’s a clip detailing one of the latest #OperationPlatinum updates:
